because try as I might, I can find no poetry in shoes that seem to smell even before you take them off

No poetry, no, but can I recommend bicarb soda in them. Sprinkle it in (or on, if they’re sandals) and leave it overnight, then brush off in the morning. A great improvement.
It’s the ones that still have colour leeching from the soles that tick me off. Pong, I can deal with – that washes off. Black leather dye takes way more effort. ~sob~
