Being the only person over the age of 6 who hasn’t read The Handmaid’s Tale, I thought I’d give it a whirl.
So if you need me, I’m on the couch. With the packet of Mint Slice biscuits the mister thought he’d hidden from me.
we're all making our own sense of things

Oh, enjoy, in that weird heartsick way that good creepy writing evokes.
Just resist the urge to see the movie. Please.
Oh. It’s going to take more than one packet to get me through this. Bloody hell.
Hmmm, I havne’t read it either (hangs head), thought it’s on The List.
Sounds like a great day …
Every woman should read it. Some states in the US are probably this close to getting there [holds fingers a skerrick apart].
I loved it but haven’t read it for a long time. A blogger somewhere mentioned that it has the best first page of any novel ever, so I must grab a copy soon for a re-read.
HAVEN’T read it THOUGH it’s on the List.
Oops.
&D, I’m sure you’re right. I haven’t read Virginia Woolf either, though I plan to by year’s end.
Meh, read this first.
Big Call, AD. But it is true, Ariel, I can hardly put it down. Only email-checking addiction is stronger.
I read it a long time ago and was underwhelmed, but then I do find a lot of Margaret Attwood falls somewhere in the quadrant between the underwhelming and weird axes…If you can imagine ‘weird’ and ‘ordinary’ at either end of an X-axis, and ‘overwhelming’ and ‘underwhelming’ at either end of a Y-axis.
I’m always fascinated by dystopian future novels.
So how’s it going?
I love feminist dystopian novels. I wrote an essay about them once upon a time.
Another good one, although not quite as gripping, is Zoe Fairbairn’s ‘Benefits’, set in Britain.
I’ll have to wait a while until I start on another AD. I’ll need some time to recover. Not quite finished, but close.
Ariel, I haven’t read it either. But I have read (and indelibly imprinted on all available brain surfaces) Cat’s Eye.
Read the Woolf too, Orlando for sheer pleasure. Atopian, but in a nice way.
Add me to the list of people who haven’t read it too.
Oh, and the girl guide biscuits are choc mint slice too. Seems if we were in the same vicinity we actually could have come to a good arrangement! 🙂
I’ve already eaten about 12 boxes of them in three weeks, I’m done for.
