We went to Turkey for ten days which yielded all manner of surprises including a balloon ride, and a sumo wrestler in front of the blue mosque.
Here is a photo of eldest lad absorbed in a Charlie Bone audiobook. Also sprawling and taking up what seems to be a lot of space. It wasn’t at all difficult to get a photo of eldest lad, sprawling and absorbed in an audiobook. I just had to point my camera at him at any random time.

I really wanted my children to love stories and narratives and losing themselves in other worlds.
Except, you know, for goodness’ sake. We’re in Capadoccia. You could listen to Charlie Bone in the plane.
Which is pretty much how things are between me and eldest lad right now.
I know, thirdcat, I know….
…but I also remember barely sticking my head out of the English canal boat when I was twelve because I was far too engrossed in drawing tiny designs on my own handmade greeting cards
…and worse, standing in York Minster, yawning and saying to Dad, “Seen one cathedral, seen ’em all.” He must have wanted to ram my face into a stone buttress. Several times!
I remember reading the entire works of the Pullein-thompsons – not exactly Grate Literature – while driving around the UK at 13. Wot a waste chiz chiz chiz
(Reel Molesworth, I blame you)
I had a stand up row with Eldest last summer because she didn’t want to listen to an actor pretending to be an alchemist at a visitor centre. She wanted to go for a picnic. Bloody kids.
I love this and I love that pic. Of course I have my own version of this and have posted many pics of her reading in Spain and reading while touring ancient Roman ruins in Rabat, etc.
Speaking as one of those kids who was always told to look up from my book and see the topiary/ruins/valuable thing/scenery… I have fond memories of all the places I have read things. He’s always going to remember that archway and book, if only because you documented the experience.
Yes damn children wanting to experience things in their own way. I will remember the park (in Brisbane) because of how well it was all set out and how fun it must be in summer with all the water spouts on, whereas he is more likely to remember the icecream shop across the road (which did fab icecreams). But we both still hugely enjoyed our holiday.
